Twenty-one

After ten minutes of sitting in silence, I tore my gaze away from the pawn shop and glanced at Riley, who’d been watching me watch the area. “What?”

He met my eyes, looking sincere in his admiration. “Lex, I think I could–”

A car parked, and a man got out. At first, I didn’t recognize him. He wore a hooded jacket. But when he turned to look around before pulling something out of the trunk, I saw his face. “Isn’t that Alfred Sigfried?”

Riley reached for the radio, calling it in while we watched from our vantage point. “I never thought we’d get eyes on Sigfried. Frank must have lit some dynamite underneath him when he got made.”

“What do you think he’s got in that bag?” It looked like a gym bag but half the size.

“Hopefully, the stolen shit he took from Big Bill.”

We watched as Sigfried made his way down the street and entered the pawn shop. Riley opened the car door, checking to make sure his gun was holstered underneath his jacket and his cuffs were concealed from passersby.

“Wait here. We don’t want to spook him. If he makes a run for it and gets back to his car before I grab him, follow him.”

I slid across the front seat and got behind the wheel. “Are you sure you don’t want me to go with you? This isn’t exactly protocol.”

“He’s already leery. If he sees both of us, he’ll take off or worse. For all we know, he has half a dozen loaded firearms in that bag. Backup is on the way. But if I need your help, I’ll call. Until then, keep watch from here. Let me know if any of his pals show up. I don’t want to walk into an ambush.”

Anxiously, I waited for backup to arrive. The last place Riley needed to be was alone with an armed assailant. Several cars drove by, but no one stopped. I didn’t recognize the vehicles, but I didn’t hear or see a single motorcycle. Alfred Sigfried was alone.

Riley remained outside the pawn shop, window shopping while he kept his eyes on Sigfried. At least he was taking a few precautions before entering an unknown situation.

Two minutes later, Lightman and Hawking pulled up beside me. Lightman got out of the car, signaling for me to roll down the window.

“What’s going on?” he asked.

I filled him in, nodding to where Riley was positioned.

“Okay, stay here and maintain eyes on the area. At the first sign of trouble, you let us know.” Lightman marched off in the direction of the pawn shop.

Hawking got out of the car and stood beside it. “Sigfried might recognize us from the canvassing and follow-ups we’ve conducted. That’s what Lightman told me before we got here.”

“Do you think Sigfried saw us? As far as I know, we never got near him.”

“I don’t know.” Hawking stared at the pawn shop. “I only see the one door. Do you think there’s a back entrance?”

“Just the side door. It opens into that alley.
